Kapolei High closes due to coronavirus cases among staff
Kapolei High School’s campus will be closed to students and staff until next week after three employees tested positive for COVID-19.
The campus shifted to teleworking for all staff and full distance learning effective Wednesday, with plans to reopen Nov. 12, the department announced late Monday. The school is closed today and Nov. 11 because of state holidays.
Officials said the campus closure was made “out of an abundance of caution.” The school was already in distance learning, but employees were on campus.
“The Department of Health advised the school that it does not appear as though transmission of COVID-19 occurred on campus,” Principal Wesley Shinkawa wrote in a letter to families. “They are continuing to investigate these cases.”
Here are the details:
>> On Thursday, the school was made aware that an employee, who was last on campus Oct. 22 and had minimal contact with staff and students, had a positive test.

>> On Friday, the school was informed that an employee last on campus Oct. 16 had tested positive. Due to the timing of the case and symptom onset, “it does not fall into the window of time where students and staff are impacted,” the department said.
>> On Monday, the school learned of a potential case, still pending confirmation, of an employee last on campus on Oct. 21.
The department advised anyone with concerns about these cases to contact their health care provider or the Health Department using the options listed at health.hawaii.gov/docd/contact-us/.
Grab-and-go meal service will be suspended at Kapolei High, but families may visit any other public school to pick up meals.
