A gas leak that closed a section of Waiakamilo Road in Kalihi this morning has been secured, but crews continue to fix the damage to an 8-inch supply line.

A construction crew working on Waiakamilo Road this morning ruptured the gas line between Hart and Kalani streets.

Honolulu firefighters responded to a call just before 10:25 a.m., according to spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy of the Honolulu Fire Department, and the Honolulu Police Department closed a section of the road.

Due to elevated readings taken by the HazMat unit, firefighters evacuated some buildings in the area as a precautionary measure.

No injuries were reported.

Among the businesses evacuated was Hawaii News Now, which set up in a warehouse a couple of blocks down the road and put on the evening news using a makeshift set.

Police have closed the makai-bound lanes of Waiakamilo Road in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.

A Hawaii Gas crew continues to work to repair the damage, company spokeswoman Coreen Lee said this evening.

In a statement, Hawaii Gas said, “While we understand the inconvenience and disruption the damage has caused, the safety of all customers and the public remains our top concern. The Hawaii Gas crew is working to make these repairs and hopefully reopen the roads ahead of morning traffic.”
