The Waianae barricade situation ended this morning with a man in custody after a roughly 17-hour standoff with police that left a Honolulu Police Department dog injured.

”The suspect in the Waianae barricade incident is now in custody,” HPD officials said in a social media post at about 7:30 a.m. “There were no injuries to the suspect or officers. An HPD K9 was injured and received medical treatment.”

Waianae Intermediate School is closed today due to the barricade situation at a nearby residence which began Thursday afternoon.

“Due to a situation within the community, we will be closing school for today as a precaution,” says a message on the school’s website.

A standoff between a barricaded man armed with a bow and arrows, state deputy sheriffs and Honolulu police prompted a “soft lockdown” of Waianae Intermediate School Thursday afternoon.

Police responded at 2:36 p.m. to a report of an aggravated assault in the 85-100 block of Ala Walua Street, according to an entry on HPD’s Current Calls for Police Service website.

Deputy sheriffs tried to serve the occupant of the home with an eviction notice this morning, according to sources. Not wanting to leave, the man inside the home allegedly used a bow to release arrows at the deputy sheriffs and barricaded himself inside.

Police and deputy sheriffs were attempting to end the standoff. HPD’s Specialized Services Division officers also responded to the Waianae standoff.

At about 3:20 p.m., HPD advised school officials to do a soft lockdown and keep people indoors. The lockdown impacted about 300 students enrolled in after-school programs, according to the Hawaii Department of Education.

As parents arrived to pick up their children, the kids were escorted into their custody.

HPD announced the barricade in a 4:06 p.m. post on the department’s social media feeds. The community is asked to avoid the area.

All of the facilities at Waianae District Park closed early due to the barricade situation, according to the city Department of Parks & Recreation. All permitted activities at the park are cancelled and event organizers have been notified.

“We hope for a peaceful resolution,” according to a post on the department’s social media feed.
