There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The earthquake occurred at 11:09 p.m. Hawaii time on Friday or 6:09 p.m. on Saturday in Japan. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 16.7 miles east of Ishinomaki at a depth of 33.5 miles. That’s off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, in the country’s rugged northeast, which was heavily damaged during the huge earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a release.

Buildings shook in the Japanese capital of Tokyo and a tsunami advisory was issued for the country’s northeast coast. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The tsunami advisory was issued for Miyagi prefecture and officials there said there were no immediate reports of damage.
