Kunia residents return home after brush fire causes brief evacuation

A brush fire that led to the evacuation of about 100 Kunia Village homes was contained late Thursday night, allowing residents to return, Honolulu Fire Department officials said early this morning.

A total of 45 firefighters, from 13 HFD and four Federal Fire Department units arrived shortly after a 911 call at 7:46 p.m. reported the brush fire near the Kunia Village neighborhood and the intersection of Kunia Road and Kunia Drive, officials said.

HFD said since the Kunia Village neighborhood was downwind of the blaze, Honolulu Police Department officers were asked to evacuate about 100 homeowners at 8:33 p.m.

The fire came within 20 feet of some homes but HFD officials said firefighters protected the properties and none were damaged.

The fire burned about 4 acres. Firefighters had it under control at 10:10 p.m and residents were told they could return home.

The blaze was declared 100% contained at 10:58 p.m.

A firefighter sustained a minor injury while fighting the fire, HFD said.
