Competitive golf on Kauai with initial Prince Invitational

The inaugural Prince Invitational will be July 24 and 25 at the Princeville Prince Golf Course on Kauai. The tournament is open to professionals and amateurs.

"Kauai is home to some of Hawaii’s top amateur players and junior golfers, yet it is the only island without a competitive golf event, since the Kauai Open was discontinued eight years ago," said Prince Director of Golf Steve Murphy. "We want to fill that void with a new annual event."

The Prince is ranked No. 1 in Hawaii by Golf Digest.

The tournament will have a 36-hole stroke play format, with four flights based on USGA Handicap Index – Professional/Championship (handicap of 5 or less), A Flight (6-11), B Flight (12-18), and Women’s (open). The overall champion will be the player with the lowest 36-hole gross score.

Professionals will compete for cash prizes and amateurs for merchandise, with the final purse determined by the number of entries and sponsors.

The $175 entry fee includes green fees, prizes, tee gifts and awards luncheon Sunday afternoon. Entry is limited to the first 120, with a deadline of July 16.

Entry forms are available at Kauai golf course pro shops. Forms can also be requested at info@princeville.com.

For information on the tournament or sponsorship opportunities, contact Murphy at 808-826-5065 or smurphy@princeville.com.

Pre-event practice rounds will be offered to registered golfers at a reduced rate.

Maui Open set for August

This year’s Dunes at Maui Lani Maui Open will be Aug. 7 and 8. It has a 36-hole stroke play format.

The tournament has two flights. The Championship Flight winner is the golfer with the lowest 36-hole gross score. Pros, seniors (50-older), super seniors (60-older) and amateurs with a handicap index of 6.2 or better are eligible. A Flight golfers must have a June handicap index of 15.4 or better, with the winner having the best low-net score.

Entry fee is $225 for Aloha Section pros and $275 for unaffiliated pros. Amateurs are $175.

Entry deadline is July 15. Tournament reception is Aug. 6, at 6 p.m., at Cafe O’Lei at The Dunes.
