Wie, Kim, Kono all miss cut at US Women’s Open

All three Hawaii golfers are out at the U.S. Women’s Open in Oakmont, Pa.

Michelle Wie, a one-time phenom from Punahou who now attends Stanford, shot 76 today to finish at 16-over 158.

Stephanie Kono, a Punahou alum now at UCLA, also shot 76 today to close at 12-over 154.

Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident now at Denver, shot 84 yesterday to finish at 21-over 163.

The cut was at 10-over.

Wie and Kono finished their rounds today after heavy rains suspended the second round Friday with 100 golfers yet to tee off.

Wie, who shot 11-over 82 Thursday, bogeyed the first two holes before play was stopped. Kono, who opened with a 7-over 78, bogeyed her first hole before her round was halted.

All golfers had to finish their second round early today and those who made the cut played later today. Paula Creamer and Sakura Yokomine shared the lead at even par after two rounds.

Wie, a perennial LPGA contender early in her career but a nonfactor recently, had three birdies in her second round today. But she had three double bogeys and four bogeys. She closed her round with a bogey-double bogey.

Wie needed 69 putts to get through her two rounds of 82-76.

Wie led the U.S. Women’s Open after three rounds at age 15 in 2005 and tied for third a year later, but hasn’t made the cut since then.

She withdrew in ’07, missed the cut in ’08 and failed to qualify last year. Wie also hasn’t placed in the Top 10 in a major since 2006, after doing so in seven of the first 11 majors she played.

Asked to assess her latest U.S. Women’s Open, she said: “Complete fail.”

Kono had six bogeys and a birdie in her second round.

Kim completed her second round Friday before the round was called.
