Laie man is indicted in attempted robbery

An Oahu grand jury has indicted a Laie man on a first-degree robbery charge for allegedly attempting to rob his father of cash and drugs.

The father of the suspect was originally arrested for shooting his son, but police said further investigation determined that the shooting was in self-defense.

Kip Orton, 41, of Laie was shot in the upper-right chest Sunday at his family’s Naupaka Street home in Laie and was arrested after his discharge from the hospital.

A police affidavit said Orton kicked open the locked door of his parents’ bedroom Sunday and demanded cash and prescription pain medication. The son brandished a knife as he made his demands, the affidavit said.

Police said Orton’s father picked up a handgun and that Orton was shot during a struggle.

On Monday, Orton’s brother, Rik Mikio Orton, a former police officer, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 30 months in federal prison on a firearms charge.
