Sample wine at Symposia

Guests will be able to interact with vintners and sample selections from Napa and Sonoma at a Symposia wine event 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kahala Hotel and Resort.

The hotel’s executive chef, Wayne Hirabayashi, and his culinary team will also prepare summer-inspired dishes at four culinary stations.

Food writer to give talk

Star-Advertiser contributor Wanda Adams will kick off the sixth-anniversary celebration of the Kapolei Public Library with a free talk on her experiences writing her Honolulu Advertiser column "The Island Plate."

Adams has researched the 150-year history of island food, learning about the origins of such staples as Saloon Pilot crackers, Spam, lomi salmon and the plate lunch.

Her talk begins at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday. Call 693-7050.

Learn to shop and eat local

Ola Loa Wellness kicks off a series of food and cooking classes on Aug. 26 called "Eat Local Every Day! A Farm to Table Cooking Class & Wellness Series."

Participants will shop for, cook and eat locally grown foods featured by vendors of the Haleiwa Farmers’ Market. Classes will be held at the Tin Roof Ranch, 61-470 Kamehameha Highway.

Each cooking class will present a three- to four-course meal, including dessert.

Classes run 6:30 to 9 p.m.; subsequent classes will be held Sept. 16, Oct. 14 and Nov. 11.
