UH gets $35.9M to beef up state’s broadband network

The University of Hawaii will receive $35.9 million in federal stimulus money to beef up the state’s broadband network and expand public computer centers.

The bulk of the funding, $34 million, will be used to lay 454 miles of new fiber optic cable and incorporate 1,070 of existing fiber lines into the current state network, according to a news release from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

The project will enhance broadband access for about 380 public institutions, including universities, community colleges and libraries.

The UH will receive an additional $1.9 million to fund nearly 700 new broadband-connected computer workstations for public use in 60 facilities.
