Irons pushes on to third round

Kauai’s Andy Irons won his first-round heat yesterday in the Hurley Pro in 3- to 5-foot surf at Lower Trestles in San Onofre, Calif.

Irons advanced to the third round with his victory.

Hawaii’s Dusty Payne, Roy Powers and Fred Patacchia all placed third in their first-round heats and moved on to the second round.

Patacchia went on to lose his second-round heat and was eliminated.

The second round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event will continue today, surf permitting.

 

Hubbard, Slay win half marathon

Sarah Slay and Tyler Hubbard were the overall winners in the Windward Half Marathon yesterday at Kailua.

Slay finished in 1 hour, 43 minutes, 40.7 seconds to top all female competitors. Melisa Hough was second in 1:44:28.5.

Hubbard (1:17:10.5) beat second-place finisher William Gardner (1:22:07.2) by nearly 5 minutes.

Meagan Snyder (23:40.0) and Kainalu Picl (17:57.0) won the Rosie Wall 5K, which was also held in Kailua yesterday.

 

Gum wins wahine sprint triathlon

Charisa Gum won the Try Fitness Hawaii Presents Na Wahine Sprint Triathlon yesterday.

She finished the 500-meter swim, 12-mile bike and 5-kilometer run in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 46 seconds.

Amy Cocanour finished second in 1:06:01.

 

Okino and Yamashita capture tourney

Cyd Okino of Honolulu and Scott Yamashita of Kapolei won the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Mixed Team Championship yesterday at Kauai Lagoons Golf Club.

Okino and Yamashita won the title by topping Cassy Isagawa of Wailuku and Andre Bedard of Kihei in a three-hole playoff.
