Toddler struck by SUV identified

The 17-month-old boy who died when a relative’s sport utility vehicle backed over him Friday in Makaha was identified by the city Medical Examiner’s Office as Tyrell Niko.

He was struck as the Toyota Highlander was reversing out of the carport on Kapue Street at about 7:45 a.m., police said.

The driver, 49, was an aunt who also lives at the house.

The death was the third on Oahu since December involving a toddler who had been run over by a reversing vehicle in a residential driveway.

Crossing pedestrian hit by car

A woman believed to be in her 20s or 30s was injured early yesterday morning after being struck by a car as she was crossing the street.

The incident occurred at Bishop and King streets at about 3:20 a.m.

The woman was taken to a local trauma center in critical condition, said Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Bryan Cheplic.

Man found unconscious downtown

Police were investigating an apparent assault after a man was found unconscious near the intersection of Bethel and Pauahi streets at about 12:40 yesterday morning.

The man, believed to be in his 20s or 30s, was taken to a local trauma center in critical condition, according to Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Bryan Cheplic.

Detained girl tries to flee hospital

A 16-year-old girl being held at the Juvenile Detention Center in Kapolei attempted to escape Friday afternoon while at Hawaii Medical Center West in Ewa, authorities said.

The girl was at the center when she complained of an illness and was taken to the hospital, police said. While there, just before 4 p.m., she allegedly attempted to escape. An unidentified victim, a 29-year-old woman, prevented her from leaving.

During the struggle, the detainee assaulted the victim, police said. The girl was returned to the detention home, where police later arrested her.

3 teens nabbed in phone snatching

Three teenagers were arrested after they stole a cell phone from another boy Friday night in Kalihi.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Police said the three boys, ages 16, 16 and 13, confronted the victim, 14, and demanded money and his cell phone.

Police located the suspects in the area and arrested them on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
