Man ID’d as hit-and-run victim

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man killed Sunday night in a hit-and-run incident on South King Street as Michael Murphy, 22, of Honolulu.

Murphy was crossing South King Street near Victoria Street and the Blaisdell Concert Hall at about 11:05 p.m. when he was struck by a dark-colored vehicle that left the scene. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:24 p.m.

The medical examiner said Murphy died of multiple internal injuries.

Police are seeking the public’s help in locating the driver involved in the crash. Police said the car should have extensive front-end damage and might have a cracked windshield. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Baby hit by SUV in driveway dies

A toddler died after being struck yesterday by a sport utility vehicle in a driveway on Maui.

Sophia Vermey, who was 1 year and 10 months old, died from her injuries at Maui Memorial Hospital.

Police Lt. Barry Aoki said a 32-year-old woman was driving the vehicle in a driveway at 95 Hui Road F in Napili when the incident occurred at 11:25 a.m.

Aoki said the driveway is shared by people living in multiple residences.

No one was arrested, according to Lahaina police.

The fatality was Maui’s 13th in 2010, compared with 20 for the same period last year.

Man charged with assault of woman

A 30-year-old Waianae man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman as she slept in Makaha early Monday.

Baermel Balos of Manuku Street remained in police custody last night, unable to post $50,000 bail. He was charged with first-degree sexual assault.

Alleged burglar is caught napping

A burglary suspect apparently couldn’t stay awake long enough to make her getaway, police said.

The 19-year-old woman was found sleeping in the parlor of a Salt Lake home Tuesday night when the 46-year-old woman who lives in the house arrived home about 9:48 p.m.

Police said the suspect was found with a glass "ice" pipe and personal items belonging to the 46-year-old.

Police arrested the 19-year-old on burglary and drug charges at the home on Ala Ilima Street.
