Big Island man charged in stabbing

A 42-year-old Mountain View man has been charged for allegedly stabbing a 43-year-old Volcano man, police said yesterday.

Police charged Darren I. Hopfe with first-degree assault. His bail was set at $25,000.

Officers responded at 12:04 a.m. Sunday to a report that a man was stabbed in the area of Old Volcano Road and Nahelenani Street.

Officers found the 43-year-old man with cuts to his hands and abdomen. He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition. Police said the man underwent surgery and that his condition has been upgraded to stable.

Teen arrested at elementary school

A 15-year-old boy allegedly assaulted two male educational workers at Waiahole Elementary School.

Police were called to the school at about 10:20 a.m. Monday after the student allegedly assaulted a 31-year-old Department of Education employee on school property.

When another DOE employee, 52, tried to intervene, the teen turned his attention to the older man and began assaulting him.

Police officers were called and arrested the boy on suspicion of two counts of second-degree assault.

Woman is held in extortion case

Police arrested a 30-year-old Salt Lake woman on suspicion of first-degree extortion.

Police said the woman confronted a 27-year-old man on Jan. 22 in Kailua, saying that if he did not give her money, he would be physically harmed.

Police arrested the woman Monday.
