Suspect held in attempted robbery

Police arrested a 73-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob the Keeaumoku Street Walmart Tuesday morning.

Police said the man, of a Chinatown address, demanded money from two employees at the customer service counter. He claimed to have a gun though none was seen.

He left without taking anything and was followed by several employees, who found him in a nearby apartment building on Sheridan Street, police said. Officers entered an apartment unit and arrested him. He was being held at the Alapai Street cellblock pending a first-degree robbery charge.

Kauai man flown to Oahu after crash

A 53-year-old man was airlifted to Oahu yesterday after a two-car crash on Kauai that also injured three other people.

The 8:48 a.m. crash closed Kaumualii Highway in Omao for nearly two hours while police investigated.

Ken Firestone, 53, of Kalaheo was driving a Dodge Neon west when he crossed the center line near the 8-mile marker and hit an oncoming Ford Taurus, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

Firestone’s car caught fire, but the flames were quickly extinguished. Firefighters removed Firestone from the car, and he was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. His condition was not known.

Terrence Webber, 62, of Minnesota, his 61-year-old wife, Diane, and 28-year-old daughter, Alli, were in the Taurus and taken to Wilcox for treatment. The couple was expected to be released yesterday, and their daughter remained in stable condition at Wilcox.
