2 crash victims include officer

A police officer and a 29-year-old Aiea man were seriously injured early yesterday in a two-car collision in McCully.

Police said the Aiea man made a left turn from McCully Street into the path of an oncoming blue-and-white police car at the intersection of Young Street at 2:11 a.m.

The man’s 1991 Honda Civic and the officer’s 2010 Ford Crown Victoria sustained heavy damage, police traffic Sgt. Andrew Berky said.

Paramedics took the man to Straub Clinic and Hospital, and the officer was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center, both in serious condition.

Alcohol appeared to be a factor on the part of the Aiea man, Berky said.

Attack on teacher gets boy arrested

Police arrested a 13-year-old student Friday at Central Middle School after he allegedly kicked and head-butted his teacher, police said.

The boy wanted to leave his classroom at the downtown school so he could talk with his counselor about 11:30 a.m., but his teacher said the counselor was busy with another student, police said.

The boy left the class without permission and ran to the counselor’s office, where he began punching and kicking the door, police said.

The teacher, a 30-year-old man, restrained the student, who then kicked and head-butted the teacher, police said.

Officers arrested the boy on suspicion of second- degree assault. He was released pending investigation.

Maui man dies after crashing car

A 26-year-old Kahului man died yesterday of injuries suffered when his car crashed into trees along Iao Valley Road Friday night, Maui police said.

Police identified the man as Beau Hiwatashi. It was the first traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared with two at this time last year.

Hiwatashi was driving a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera when it went off the road near Ua Place in Wailuku and hit trees along the shoulder about 9:42 p.m., police said.

Paramedics took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died. He appeared to have been wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.
