Gymnasts qualify for nationals

Eight gymnasts from Hawaii qualified for next month’s Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championship and another five for the Level 9 Western National Championships following performances at last weekend’s regionals in Pullman, Wash.

Among the eight from Level 10 were Hawaiian Island Twister’s Tamara Rapp, who placed third all-around in the Junior D division after taking firsts in vault and floor, second on bars and fifth on beam.

In Senior B, Kokokai Gym’s Randi Lau placed third all-around, with a win on beam, and Jenna Frowein was fourth all-around, first in floor. Tiana Montell from Panteon Gymnastics on the Big Island was fourth all-around in Senior D with Carson Tabiolo (HIT) seventh. Pantheon’s Stephanie Goya was seventh in Senior C.

In Junior A, HIT’s Danaea Davix was fifth all-around and teammate Tracie Villanueva was fourth in Junior C. Named as Level 10 alternates were HIT’s Keaolani Cenido-Niheu (Junior D) and Kokokahi’s Kelli Nakashima (Senior B).

Level 9 qualifiers were HIT’s Kristi Hayashida (ninth, Senior C); Kokokahi’s Kaili Akeo (12th, Senior C); HIT’s Sunako Remillard (eighth, Junior C); HIT’s Daisha Paulino (10th, Junior D); and Panehon’s Shannon Carvalho (12th, Junior B).

The Level 10 competition is May 12-15 in Long Beach, Calif., while Level 9 is May 5-7 in San Diego.

Out of the 22 Hawaii gymnasts at Level 8, Rainbow Gymnastics’s Maela Lazaro was first all-around in Junior B, winning on floor. Also, Lazaro’s teammates Janyce Apuya and Karly Gushiken took fifth and eighth in Junior B, Alyssa Nakamura of Island Tumblers was ninth.

In Junior A, Jenna Domingo of Island Tumblers was fifth all-around and Jaelyn Domingo 10th, with HIT’s Nicole Lauro second on beam and fifth on bars. In Junior C, Mari Domingo of Island Tumblers was seventh all-around and HIT’s Savannah Lohr was fifth on vault and beam and ninth on floor in Senior D.
