Big Island man’s body found at bottom of ravine

Hawaii County police are investigating whether foul play may be involved in the death of a man whose body was found at the bottom of a ravine.

Police said the body is believed to be that of an 84-year-old local man last seen by a caregiver on Sunday.

Officers found the man’s vehicle Tuesday near the edge of a ravine on a macadamia nut farm on Kaiwiki Road after a witness reported the vehicle, police said.

Officers found a shoe in front of the car and could see another shoe after looking down into the ravine.

Firefighters helped police with the search and found the body on the river bed about 5 p.m., firefighters said. A fire helicopter lifted the body out of the ravine.

Police said the body had injuries and the identity has not been confirmed. An autopsy has been requested to determine the cause of death.
