Woman charged with attempted murder

A 26-year-old woman at whom police shot after she tried to run down two officers with a car in Kapahulu last week made her initial court appearance Monday on charges of first-degree attempted murder, unauthorized control of a vehicle and parole violations.

Leinette K. Reyes, who appeared in Honolulu District Court with her left arm bandaged, is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Reyes sustained undisclosed, minor injuries when she was arrested, but police said she was not shot. She has 12 convictions on Oahu and Hawaii island ranging from shoplifting to promoting drugs and car theft.

Police said that at about 8:30 p.m. Friday members of the Waikiki patrol district’s Crime Reduction Unit were staking out an apartment frequented by a woman suspected in an auto theft in Makiki last Wednesday.

When the woman arrived in a vehicle, several officers approached on foot, police said.

The woman reversed the vehicle with the officers in pursuit. She then drove forward toward two of the officers, police said. The officers were not injured.

The officers fired two rounds each at the woman, but she managed to flee, police said.

Police arrest records show the suspect was arrested on the grounds of a Clement Street apartment complex at about 8:40 p.m. Friday.
