A veteran Honolulu Police Department sergeant has been named HPD’s Officer of the Year.

Sgt. Lawrence F. Santos Jr., who has 28 years of service, supervises the Central Honolulu Weed and Seed Community Policing Team.

Santos has organized dozens of sign-waving campaigns, citizens patrols and graffiti paint-outs. The team has also put together innovative programs that help at-risk teenagers and seniors.

As part of Police Week, Chief Louis Kealoha honored two other individuals.

Curtis T. Maeshiro was named HPD’s Civilian Employee of the Year. A research analyst for the Information Technology Division, this is the second time the 30-year veteran has won the award. 

Maeshiro played a key role in design, layout and publishing projects including the department’s strategic plan and annual report.

The Outstanding Citizen Award was given to Dana L. Nakasato of the state Judiciary Information Management System. 

Nakasato is credited with assisting HPD’s transition to the electronic bench warrants system.
