Rainbow Warriors rally past HPU 62-56

University of Hawaii guard Zane Johnson scored 21 points and the Rainbow Warrior basketball team rallied to a 62-56 win over Hawaii Pacific University in an exhibition game tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbows held a two-point lead at halftime and trailed by seven with 8 minutes left in the game. Johnson scored seven points in the final 5:50 to help the Rainbows pull out the win.

UH center Vander Joaquim finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks and guard Shaquille Stokes added 11 points and four assists.

Sean Jones led HPU with 11 points and Nick Frazier added nine.

Johnson hit three of his five 3-pointers in the first half and UH led 33-31 at halftime. But the Sea Warriors went on a 10-0 run midway through the second half and took a 49-42 lead with 8:17 left.

UH clawed back and Johnson tied the game at 52-52 with two free throws with 4:54 left. The Rainbows then reclaimed the lead when Bobby Miles grabbed a rebound off a block by Joston Thomas and scored on a fast-break layup.

After the Sea Warriors answered with two free throws by Glenn Miller, Thomas gave UH the lead back with a fade-away jumper with 1:40 left and Johnson made two free throws to give UH  a 58-54 edge.

After a UH turnover, HPU guard LaBrent Chappell made both ends of a one-and-one to cut the lead to 58-56 with 38.7 seconds left.

Stokes converted a one-and-one then came up with a steal and fed Garrett Jefferson for a break-away dunk in the final seconds to put the game away.

UH opens the regular season against Cal State Northridge on Monday at 11 p.m.
