Woman burned in Waipahu cooking fire

A 38-year-old woman sustained second-degree burns in an apparent cooking fire Saturday in Waipahu.

Firefighters were sent to Hoomakoa Street shortly before 4 p.m. and found a lot of smoke, said Honolulu fire Capt. Rick Karasaki.

Witnesses reported flames had been visible, but someone put out the fire before firefighters arrived. One person in the home sustained burns apparently while trying to put out the fire, he said.

According to emergency dispatch reports, the woman’s clothing caught fire, and her husband doused her with water. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital with second-degree burns to her upper body.
