Fresno finishes off Hawaii in WAC baseball tournament

Billy Hull

MESA, Ariz. >> Second-seeded Fresno State won its fifth Western Athletic Conference tournament title in six years with a dominant 15-4 win over top-seeded Hawaii on Saturday night at Hohokam Stadium.

The Rainbows (34-25), with an RPI that will probably finish somewhere in the 60’s, will find out on Monday morning at 6:30 whether they will receive an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament.

The Rainbows staved off elimination with an 18-10 win over Louisiana Tech earlier in the day.

UH and LaTech combined for 28 runs, 34 hits and used 14 different pitchers. The game took 3 hours, 38 minutes.

Nine different Bulldogs appeared in the seventh spot of the lineup. LaTech played 19 different players.

Lenny Linsky struck out the final two batters of the game to set a single-season school record with his 14th save.

Randy Yard (3-0) got the win with two shutout innings in relief of starter Zach Gallagher, who allowed four runs on five hits over the first two innings.

Hawaii played without sophomores Breland Almadova and Pi’ikea Kitamura, who missed the game with apparent food poisoning.

Kitamura returned to play against Fresno State, going 3-for-4.

Kolten Wong went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer against LaTech to move into second place on the school’s all-time list with 25 career home runs.

Sean Montplaisir went 2-for-5 with a double, three runs and four RBIs.
