A change in the winds will bring vog, cold temperatures and perhaps heavy showers to the islands through the weekend as the Sony Open gets underway at the Waialae Country Club.

National Weather Service forecasters say two cold fronts are moving over the islands tonight into Friday, bringing a 50 percent chance of rain to Honolulu. Cold air following the fronts will also bring temperatures in the 60s, perhaps dropping into the 50s Friday night in upper elevations.

Winds are light and variable today, which should benefit golfers at the Sony Open.  But the winds are likely to change again over the weekend and the chance of rain remains in the forecast through Sunday.

Today’s light winds, mostly from the south, are bringing vog from Kilauea over the other islands.

A second cold front Friday may bring more showers and cold winds from the northwest, rather than the usual tradewinds from the northeast.

Those northwest winds should blow the vog away from Oahu Friday, but the vog may return over the weekend as winds shift again and become southerly as another cold front approaches.

That third cold front is expected to reach the islands Monday and Tuesday, bringing the chance of more showers.

Meanwhile, a high surf advisory remains in effect for north and west-facing shores of Kauai and west shores of Hawaii island until 6 p.m. because of a declining swell.
