Fisherman suffers head and leg injuries during fall near Makapuu Lighthouse

A fisherman fell 30 feet from the cliffs by Makapuu Lighthouse Sunday morning and was taken to a hospital in serious condition with open fractures to both legs and a large laceration to his head, Honolulu Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said.

The victim was identified as a local man in his 20s.

He had been fishing with two friends Saturday night and they were making the nearly 50-foot climb out when the man fell around 7:04 a.m. today, Yamada said.

The fisherman lost blood and had open fractures to both legs and "a rather big laceration to his head," Yamada said.

He was conscious and alert when firefighters airlifted him in HFD’s Air 1 helicopter to a landing zone, where paramedics took him to a hospital, Yamada said.
