Mental exam of former student who made threats is denied

HILO >> A Hilo judge has denied a request for an inpatient mental examination for the 18-year-old former student accused of making threats against security staff at the Big Island campus of Kamehameha Schools.

Jeremy Costa’s attorney wants him evaluated despite previously being found fit to stand trial. Police say he posted online threats against Kamehameha security that included references to the Virginia Tech shooting.

Hawaii County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ricky Damerville says the judge denied the motion but left open the possibility for reconsideration in the future.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that since his October arrest, Costa has been arrested numerous times, including for domestic abuse of his father and threatening police officers.
