Shimmery colors add magic to red carpet

LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Lawrence. Anne Hathaway. Jessica Chastain.

All awards season long, fashion lovers have been watching to see who (and what) these and other red carpet A-listers are wearing. And on their celebrated walk to the Dolby Theatre for the 85th Academy Awards on Sunday, the stars didn’t disappoint, opting for elegant looks in soft colors, tailored corsets and simple, strapless silhouettes as embodied by Chastain’s shimmering coppery-nude mesh Armani Prive gown.

Lawrence arrived looking like a bride in a simple white strapless Dior Haute Couture gown with a strand of diamond beads streaming down her back. Hathaway, meanwhile, wore a satiny pink Prada gown that she described as "business in the front, party in the back."

Other stars that embraced the softer palette included Amy Adams, who described working with Oscar de la Renta on her strapless soft gray gown, with a billowing skirt trailing behind her, as "magical." Amanda Seyfried wore a corseted Alexander McQueen gown with a peek-a-boo neckline in silvery white. Sporting a pixie cut, the gorgeous Charlize Theron turned heads in a white Dior Haute Couture gown.

Metallic also had a presence at the Oscars.

Catherine Zeta-Jones looked like a trophy in her gold beaded Zuhair Murad. Renee Zellweger wore a shimmering gold Carolina Herrera. Halle Berry wanted to look like a Bond girl, so she came in a striped silver and black dress by Versace.

Nicole Kidman let her husband, Keith Urban, chose her L’Wren Scott in platinum and gold. And her fellow Aussie, Naomi Watts, wore a platinum sequined Armani Prive with a cutout detail at the shoulder.

The adorable Quvenzhane Wallis, who will next be starring in the title role of the Sony adaption of "Annie," was ripping her tiara-topped puppy purse Sammy as she walked the carpet looking like a princess in a sparkling royal blue princess gown by Armani Junior. Blue was also seen on Reese Witherspoon, whose daughter, Ava, helped pick out the strapless royal blue Louis Vuitton for her walk down the carpet. Even Daniel Day-Lewis wore blue.

His "Lincoln" co-star Sally Field, meanwhile, shook things up in a bold red Valentino that finished off in a trail of ruffles. Kerry Washington chose a gown with a glam bodice and slim skirt in what she described as a "corally red, hot pink" by Miu Miu. Jennifer Garner appeared in a purple Gucci with a ruffled train made especially for her to wear on this night — the biggest fashion event in the world.
