Marley Makanani: The 3-year-old appeared to have been beaten and burned before her death on Sunday, a relative says

A Circuit Court judge sentenced a 37-year-old Hawaii island man Tuesday to a maximum 20 years in prison for the death of 3-year-old Marley Makanani and for abuse of her mother and two sisters, ages 2 and 6.

Ezekiel Wakinekona pleaded guilty June 8 to manslaughter in the Jan. 15 death of Makanani, who suffered brain damage from a near drowning, head trauma and abdominal injuries.

Court affidavits showed Wakinekona found the 3-year-old partially submerged in the bathtub. She was in a coma from the near-drowning and physical abuse. The emergency room doctor found several bruises on her legs and a laceration on her hip consistent with child abuse.

Judge Ronald Ibarra sentenced Wakinekona to 20 years’ imprisonment to run concurrently with the one year.
