A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off Alaska this afternoon but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said.

The quake, centered 82 miles west-southwest of Adak in the Aleutian Islands at a depth of 21.7 miles, hit at 2:39 p.m. near the epicenter (1:39 p.m. Hawaii time), according to preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially reported to be magnitude 6.9 but the quake’s strength was later reduced to 6.4, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. “A widespread destructive tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data,” center officials said.
