Loser of its past three regional finals, Brigham Young-Hawaii breaks through, beating Dixie State to advance to the NCAA D-II basketball tournament’s Elite 8.

A meeting on Monday to discuss the future of Brigham Young-Hawaii athletics led to a decision by the BYU board of trustees on Friday to phase out sports over the next three years at the Division II program.

In a release on Friday afternoon, the school said following extended discussion and more than 10 years of analysis, it will eliminate the sports programs by 2016 and use that money to “provide educational opportunities for the increasing number of students from around the world who can be served by the university.

The school was founded in 1955 and wants to increase its student enrollment from its current 2,700 students to 3,200 and needs money now spent on sports to achieve that goal. The three-year transition will affect 11 sports that compete in the PacWest Conference.

Additional information will be made available as the transition occurs. Inquiries may be sent to communications@byuh.edu.
