Heart-related medical emergency leads to crash on Ala Wai
The driver of a Ford pickup truck veered off the road, hitting a fire hydrant and street light near the intersection of Ala Wai Boulevard and Lewers Street Saturday afternoon.
Police shut closed Ala Wai Boulevard Saturday afternoon after truck veered off the road, ran over fire hydrant and struck a utility pole.
The driver, identified as a man in his 50s, apparently suffered a heart-related medical emergency just prior to the crash, according to police. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. Two passengers in the vehicle were uninjured.
The crash, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the area fronting 2163 Ala Wai Boulevard, left the Ford F-150 truck resting on top of the hydrant and against the pole. Water from the broken hydrant flooded the street while traffic investigators worked quickly to record information from the crash site.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada said HFD personnel were able to shut off the hydrant once the investigation was completed and the truck was moved.
The street was reopened around 4:30 p.m.
