KAILUA-KONA » A resort on Hawaii’s Big Island is scrambling to get belated permits after it was cited by the county for unauthorized work.

West Hawaii Today reported Wednesday that neighbors of the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keahou Bay have complained about what they see as preferential treatment.

Canoe clubs, boat owners and recreational groups are grousing about the resort’s construction in a coastal special management area.

The county planning department says it will fine the resort $10,000 plus $100 a day if it doesn’t fix the situation.

But a later inspection shows the resort didn’t cease its work after it was ordered to stop by the county.

The Sheraton has hired Hilo planning consultant Sidney Fuke to help it get into compliance.
