Kauai invasive species officials report that a Pacific chorus frog jumped out of a Christmas tree in Wailua Houselots on Kauai Tuesday.

A Pacific chorus frog was found in a Christmas tree purchased by a couple at a Kauai Walmart today, according to the Kauai Invasive Species Committee.

The committee caught and identified the frog, which is not known to exist in the islands, at the couple’s Wailua Houselots home and reported it to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

“We want the public to be on the lookout for these types of creatures,” Keren Gundersen, KISC project manager, said in a news release. “HDOA is doing everything humanly possible to inspect these trees, but it is a huge task and things are bound to slip through.”

Any unusual pests found in non-local Christmas trees should be reported to the Department of Agriculture at 643-PEST (643-7378).
