Federal prison officials say former Schofield Barracks soldier Naeem Williams has been "a model inmate" over the nine years he has been confined at the Federal Detention Center here.

Williams, 34, is facing a death sentence for killing his 5-year-old daughter Talia in their Wheeler Army Airfield military family quarters in 2005.

The prison officials testified Friday morning in the sentencing phase of Williams’s trial. 

Correctional officer JoJo Munoz said Williams has acclimated well to his incarceration, complying with all of the rules and regulations and is respectful of authority. "He gets along with everybody," Munoz said.

Memnar Grayton was in charge of the detention center from 2002 to last year. He said he remembers only one time Williams was written up and that was for what he described as a "low-level violation." He said Williams had an old milk dispensing bladder filled with water in his cell. He said inmates use the bladder as workout weights.

The jury that last month found Williams guilty of capital murder and eligible for the death penalty is now being asked whether he should be executed or sentenced to life in prison without possibility for release. 

The sentencing phase, which began Wednesday with opening statements and testimony from Talia’s mother, Tarshia Williams — the only government witness in the trial’s sentencing phase. Her brief testimony was limited to the impact her daughter’s death has had on her life. Previously, she testified during the guilt phase.

Defense lawyers have lined up more than two dozen witness to testify in favor of a lifelong prison sentence.
