Infant’s death in Waikiki classified as homicide

The cause of death of an infant found in Waikiki hotel room on Nov. 26 was asphyxia, according to the medical examiner. The manner of death has been classified as a homicide. 

At about 7 p.m. on Nov. 26, police responded to a report of a newborn found dead at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. 

The child’s mother, a 32-year-old Korean national who was visiting Hawaii with her husband, was arrested a few hours later.

The woman was released, pending further investigation, on Nov. 28. 

The Honolulu Police Department opened a second-degree murder investigation in connection with the infant’s death, according to police spokes-woman Michelle Yu.

The medical examiner conducted an autopsy on the baby, but final results were pending the result of tests.
