Firefighters responded to a fire at 136 Kaha St. in Kailua initially reported as a vehicle fire that became a structure fire. A Jeep sits within the burned out shell of the garage. Neighbors reported someone was trying to start the vehicle moments before the fire broke out.

Honolulu Fire Department investigators will continue efforts Tuesday to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed a Kailua house Monday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Mark Nakamura said the house was vacant as owners were preparing to rent or sell the house located at 136 Kaha St.

The first alarm was at 1:16 p.m. Monday, and the first company on scene found the home 50 percent involved in fire.

The blaze was brought under control by 1:38 p.m. and extinguished at 2:11 p.m.
