Gov. Neil Abercrombie raised more than $533,700 for his re-election campaign over the past six months and $3.8 million overall.

The governor  — who reported $2.2 million in cash on hand at the end of December — is facing state Sen. David Ige in the Democratic primary.

Ige reported raising just $56,200 over the past six months and $150,000 overall, which includes money carried over from his state Senate campaign.

“Under Governor Abercrombie’s leadership, the state has been restored to financial health with a $844 million surplus, the economy is growing, and unemployment remains low,” William Kaneko, Abercrombie’s campaign manager, said in a statement.

“His administration continues to invest in giving children a head start through early childhood education, providing financial relief to seniors, and stewardship of the environment. Voters have clearly recognized these achievements. The overwhelming financial support we’ve received is a testament to their trust in the governor’s leadership.”

Ige said in a statement: “It’s common for the elected official holding the office to have the early advantage of larger donations, but I am confident the residents of Hawaii will elect someone for their character and not the amount of money spent on a campaign.” 

He continued, “By Election Day, I will have met thousands of you and hope the majority of residents will know my reputation of authenticity and collaboration and that you will hire me with your vote to serve as the people’s governor.”
