Disoriented hikers on a Moanalua Valley trail to be helped out
Honolulu Fire Dept. personnel again responded to Moanalua Valley neighborhood park, this time to aid in the search and rescue of two hikers that lost their way in the valley. The couple were not related to the ongoing volunteer search for Daylenn Pua who got lost earlier this week. Fire rescue personnel were hiking to a couple in their 30s who got disoriented in low-lying clouds Thursday afternoon while hiking on a trail in Moanalua Valley.
Battalion Chief Howard Naone said the couple had cellphones with mainland numbers, so they may be visitors.
The Fire Department got the call for help at 2:45 p.m. Thursday. A fire helicopter was launched and two rescue specialists were inserted to hike toward the couple. They are to escort them on foot until they reached a rendezvous point where a vehicle will meet them and they could be driven back to the trailhead at Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park.
Naone estimated that it would take roughly an hour to hike to them, another hour to hike to the rendezvous point.
He anticipated the couple would be out by 6 p.m., Naone said.
