A brush fire burns 100 acres of sugar cane on Maui.

Two sugar cane fires on Maui that burned fields miles apart Wednesday are of suspicious origins, Maui County Fire Department spokesman Edward Taomoto said.

A fire below Pukalani in Upcountry Maui burned 250 acres of sugar cane while the other, near the junction of Pulehu and Omaopio roads, burned six acres, he said.

No injuries were reported, and the fires did not threaten any structures.

Firefighters responded to the Pukalani area fire and the other blaze at about 6:15 p.m. and shorty before midnight, respectively.

Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. employees cut fire breaks to halt the fire below Pukalani.
