Several lanes of Ala Moana Boulevard were shut down Sunday morning as police investigated an accident that sent a bicyclist to the hospital with critical injuries.

A 47-year-old off-duty policeman is under investigation for allegedly hitting a bicyclist early Sunday morning near the entrance to Ala Moana Beach Park, sending the victim to the hospital with critical head injuries.

Police said there is no change in duty status for the officer, a 18-year veteran of the force, while the matter is under investigation. He is assigned to the Chinatown district.

Police said a red 2013 Honda, driven by the officer, struck a bicyclist at about 5:45 a.m. at  the intersection of Kamakee Street and Ala Moana Boulevard.

The bicyclist, a man in his 20s or 30s, was just outside a crosswalk, heading mauka against a traffic signal and “abruptly entered the road,” police said.

The police officer was traveling Koko Head and had the green light.

Paramedics took the victim to the hospital in critical condition, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.

He was not wearing a helmet, the EMS report said.
