A chemical spill near Kapaa Quarry and Mokapu Saddle roads closed both roads for more than five hours Tuesday.

The spill was reported at 3:22 p.m.

Four fire companies including a Hazardous Material Unit staffed with 15 personnel arrived at 3:27 p.m. to find that a flat-bed truck had dropped a pallet of swimming pool supplies, spilling approximately eight gallons of muriatic acid.

Personnel notified the state Department of Health Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office.

Firefighters contained and cleaned the spill utilizing soda ash by 3:44 p.m.

The 21-year-old driver was evaluated by paramedics and refused further treatment. No injuries were reported. No evacuations were ordered.

Both the Kapaa Quarry and Mokapu Saddle Roads were closed until 8:48 p.m.
