Kailua man killed in incident in waters off Lanikai identified
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has identified the person killed in a diving-related incident at Lanikai on Saturday as 59-year-old Sri Shim of Kailua.
Shim and his 25-year-old stepson were free diving in waters off Lanikai beach at about 1 p.m. when the stepson was struck by a passing boat.
The younger man was taken to shore and later transported to the Queen’s Medical Center.
Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety personnel initiated a subsequent search for Shim after his kayak was located approximately 600 feet offshore.
Shim’s body was recovered two hours later about 200 feet from the vessel.
The cause of death is undetermined pending an autopsy.

A accident that could have been prevented with a no boat zone.
My guess is the State will do nothing or they will have a no dive/swimming zone before they have a no boat zone.Sad day for the shim family.

Don’t see how you could make it a no boat zone… that’s a lot of area “off Lanikai”. Divers are suppose to have a large orange dive float with dive flag for each diver… haven’t heard anything about that. A dive flag on a kayak and divers within 50 to 100 feet of that isn’t really much good. With the orange float & flag it’s hard to spot divers in the water… even when the boated is paying attention. Then, there is the boater that struck the diver… how close did he come to the kayak and how fast was he going? Unfortunately sometimes, accidents happen no matter how careful everyone is.
We can send a man to the moon, but we can’t keep our water sports safe for the public.
Why is there no information on the person(s) driving the boat? Typical crappy SA reporting.
