Woman killed in auto-pedestrian accident in Waianae identified

The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the 57-year-old woman who was hit by a car while walking on Farrington Highway as Charmaine Cagata.

Cagata was walking on Farrington Highway late Tuesday night when she was hit by a car driven by a 29-year-old woman. The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died Friday. The accident occurred near the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant near Kaupuni Street.

This was the second traffic fatality this year, compared to five at the same time a year ago. It also was the second to occur on Farrington Highway last week.

Francisco Molina, 84, died Thursday after being struck by a car on Farrington Highway near Tamura Super Market Wednesday.

Police said that in both accidents speed and alcohol were not factors.

I’m going to start wearing the safety cone from the road onto my head when I cross the road.

Was poor visibility due to inadequate street lighting a factor? I know that the street lighting in my area needs improvement. It’s much too dark for pedestrians to walk safely at night. I wonder what the street lighting is like in the Kahala area?
