Dog rescue group sues Hawaii Island Humane Society

KAILUA-KONA >> A dog rescue organization is suing the Hawaii Island Humane Society.

West Hawaii Today reports Big Island Dog Rescue’s lawsuit seeks damages and says emails to and from Humane Society staff show plans to derail the group’s efforts.

The society’s attorney says the emails are fabricated. The society plans to countersue the dog rescue and file a disciplinary complaint regarding the opposing attorneys.

Tasi Autele founded the dog rescue and says a whistleblower leaked the emails to his attorneys.

The lawsuit filed Friday says that toward the middle of last year the two groups started having trouble collaborating to send adoptable animals to the mainland.

There are all kinds of animal organizations soliciting donations, etc. many of which I have never heard of. I don’t know anything about their legitimacy or operations, policies, etc. How do I determined which of the far too many organization are bona fide charities?

Question: Can a nonprofit pay its staff?

Answer: Yes. State law (which governs a nonprofit corporation) and the IRS (which governs tax-exempt status) allow a nonprofit to pay reasonable salaries to officers, employees or agents, for services rendered to further the nonprofit corporation’s tax-exempt purposes and mission.
