Cars were backed up to University after a tractor-trailer overturned near the Pali Highway offramp.
Police have closed the right two lanes of the H-1 freeway westbound before the Pali Highway offramp due to an overturned tractor-trailer.
The lane closure, announced at 1 p.m., had traffic backed up to University by 1:05 p.m. Police said heavy tow trucks are on the scene.
No serious injuries were reported.
Motorists were advised to use alternate routes.

Back in the day, I used to drive long haul big rigs on the mainland. Overturned trucks were mostly caused by too much speed in a curve or too much speed while following to close to the person in front of you. They hit the brakes, so do you and you jacknife and flip. I didn’t see if and I wasn’t there, but I’ll bet that’s the case. Truckers here on the Islands are the worst I’ve ever seen, especially on the narrow H1 lanes. Suprised there aren’t more accidents.
Really could use the Rail today….
The traffic jam was H1 East bound so how is the East bound commuters, most if not all from UH Manoa, Kahala, Hawaii Kai, etc. who need to travel into town or beyond to West Oahu going to use the rail? The would have to take a feeder bus from UH, Kahala, Hawaii Kai to Ala Moana center. Then they would have to take the train and get off somewhere between Ala Moana center and the empty field Hoopili station and then take ANOTHER feeder bus to their final destination. AND the feeder buses they must take would probably be caught in the same backed traffic as the all other commuters. Therefore the rail would be USELESS for the commuters stuck in this H1 freeway traffic jam.
…and some big rig drivers pass me like I’m standing still – is the speed limit too slow?
Another story said the trailer disconnected from the semi.
Union drivers main job is safety of everyone and equipment, many not doing their basic job.
