A 20-year-old Haiku woman was killed and a two other women hospitalized following a two-car accident in Paia Tuesday afternoon, Maui police reported.

The collision occurred at 5:27 p.m. on Baldwin Avenue, west of Mahiko Street in Paia.

A blue 2011 Nissan Altima sedan driven by Sydnee L. Apao, was traveling eastbound on Baldwin Avenue, when it crossed the center line on a right-hand curve in the roadway, colliding with a white 2015 Tesla sedan, which was traveling westbound on Baldwin Avenue. The Telsa was driven by a 65-year-old woman who was transported to the Maui Memorial Center in stable condition.

Apao was found dead at the scene of the crash. The front-seat passenger of the Nissan Altima, a 19-year-old woman from Paia, was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Apao and the operator of the Tesla Model S were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision, police said. The front-seat passenger of the Nissan Altima was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision.

This is Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality for 2016, compared to four at this time last year.

When driving on a 2 lane road stay away from the center line as far as possible. One never know when an oncoming car with an inattentive driver will cross the line. You need space as a buffer and need to watch closely at each oncoming car.
