5-year-old found after leaving school prompts investigation
Honolulu » An investigation is underway after a 5-year-old boy walked off his school’s campus and was later found about a mile away.
The boy’s mom Crystal Dejesus tells KHON-TV (http://bit.ly/2d7Ql7x) that she wants the staff at Waianae Elementary School to pay more attention to the children.
The Hawaii Department of Education says the boy was supposed to wait for his mother in the school office but mistakenly started walking home.
Dejesus says her son never walks home.
She said her son’s sibling told her he was missing, not the school.
Area residents found the boy.
No one from the school or education department was available for comment, but an emailed statement said no further details could be provided during the investigation.
A spokesman said procedures are under review.

Since Dejesus called to say she was picking him up early, why did the school remove him from class? Why not wait until the mother arrives? Odd decision. Glad there were Good Samaritans to kokua and the boy is safe.
Maybe mom called and said if he could wait in the office. Office clerks have so much going on. Could be there were some kids there for discipline. I have worked for 30 years as an educator. Sometimes the office is crammed with kids. It is easy for the kids to slip out. Sounds like an unfortunate mistake. Maybe kid was special needs and didn’t understand or hear office say to wait. Lots of variables not given here.
Times have changed, back in 1926 walked a mile one-way up an incline since school was located 100 feet above sea level amid sugar cane fields. About 2;30 PM (English School closed) walked back home and after having something to munch on walked in the opposite direction another mile to the Japanese language school for another hour of study. Finally after that walked home, all alone through down-town Kapaa, pass the liquor, pool-room, markets, bank, saloons and other merchandising establishments. Now we have perverts waiting along the pathways to schools ready to pounce on our innocent children.
Times have changed.
An unfortunate incident that turn out safely for the child. In the interim the school will probably takes some measures of improvement to prevent this from happening again.
In the real world someone would likely be losing their job over something like this. But in the world of unionized public employees in Hawaii, no one is ever held accountable, even when bad things happen to a kid. Why? Because the public worker unions own the Politicians, particularly Ige. HSTA funded his campaign for governor and Ige appointed their former head as his chief of staff. First thing Ige and his chief did was restore the pay cuts to the HSTA and give them across the board raises. All with no drug testing or requirement to hold them accountable for poor student performance. Now Ige is fixing to give in to their demands for 100’s of millions to add A/C to all schools.
