Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, shown here at a Senate Judiciary Committee on March 22, had surgery in Washington today to treat kidney cancer.

U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono is out of surgery after having her right kidney removed, according to a Twitter message from her staff today.

“Got out of surgery and doing okay! Thank you all for the well wishes!” her staff quoted the Hawaii Democrat as saying.

Hirono announced Tuesday that she had been diagnosed with kidney cancer that has spread to one of her ribs. The cancer is classified as Stage 4.

In addition to having her kidney removed, she is also scheduled to have the lesion on her rib removed in June through a noninvasive, outpatient procedure that involves intensive radiation.

Hirono, 69, said in a news release Tuesday that following the procedures no identifiable disease will be left untreated. The senator also reaffirmed her commitment to run for re-election in 2018.

Hirono’s staff has also set up a large, get well card outside her Washington office for people to sign.
