Free public car seat checks will be offered as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week on Saturday.

In 2015, nearly one in three children ages 12 and younger killed in a traffic crash were not in a car seat, booster or seat belt, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and 6,000 of the estimated 116,000 children who were injured in a traffic crash were unsecured.

In Hawaii, children under the age of 4 are required to ride in a child safety seat while children ages 4 to 7 must ride in a child passenger restraint or booster seat. Violators may be assessed a penalty up to $500.

As part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, Hawaii’s child passenger safety technicians are offering free safety checks at the following times and locations on Saturday, Sept. 23:

>> 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Waipio Shopping Center in Waipahu, Oahu, 94-1040 Waipio Uka St.

>> 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Walmart in Lihue, Kauai, 3-3300 Kuhio Highway

>> 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Target in Hilo, Hawaii island, 391 East Makaala St.

>> 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Target in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii island, 74-5455 Makala Blvd.
