Police shoot suspected car thief who allegedly ran into officer

Dan Nakaso

A man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle allegedly backed into a Honolulu police officer in Waipahu this morning and was then shot twice before being taken in critical condition to a trauma center, HPD Lt. Thomas Smith said.

Police are investigating the incident as first-degree attempted murder and first-degree criminal property damage, Smith said.

At 2 a.m. officers stopped a suspected stolen vehicle containing five people, Smith said. When the male officer — a 25-year veteran — got out of his vehicle, the driver of the suspected stolen vehicle reversed and hit him, Smith said.

Police fired two shots that both struck the driver, Smith said. It was unclear this morning which officer fired shots, he said.

The injured officer, in good condition with non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to a hospital, Smith said.

The four other occupants of the suspected stolen vehicle were all arrested, Smith said.
